Ember Days

Ember Days are three days--Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday--set aside at the beginning of each of the four seasons to offer God prayer, fasting, and abstinence.  The focus of Ember Days, which coincide with the seasons of harvest, are placed to offer God thanksgiving for His creation, to ask for a bountiful harvest, and to ask His help in using it well.  The Ember Days were instituted in the first centuries of the Church, although the exact year is unknown, as a way to counteract the pagan harvest feasts.  St. Leo the Great believed they were even of Apostolic origin, although other sources suggest the 3rd or 4th century.  Eventually the Ember Days were set to fall after Ash Wednesday, Whitsunday, the Exaltation of the Cross (specifically during the third week of September), and the feast of St. Lucy.  On Ember Wednesday and Saturday traditionally one fasts and partakes of partial abstinence, and on Ember Friday one fasts and fully abstains.

Pope St. Leo the Great wrote of the Ember Days after Whitsunday, "And so those teachers, who have instructed all the Church's sons by their examples and their traditions, began the rudiments of the Christian warfare with holy fasts, that, having to fight against spiritual wickednesses, they might take the armour of abstinence, wherewith to slay the incentives to vice... The desire to hurt us is indeed ever active in the tempter, but he will be disarmed and powerless, if he find no vantage ground within us from which to attack us... Therefore, after the days of holy gladness, which we have devoted to the honour of the Lord rising from the dead and then ascending into heaven, and after receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, a fast is ordained as a wholesome and needful practice, so that, if perchance through neglect or disorder even amid the joys of the festival any undue licence has broken out, it may be corrected by the remedy of strict abstinence, which must be the more scrupulously carried out in order that what was on this day Divinely bestowed on the Church may abide in us. For being made the Temple of the Holy Ghost, and watered with a greater supply than ever of the Divine Stream, we ought not to be conquered by any lusts nor held in possession by any vices in order that the habitation of Divine power may be stained with no pollution."

In the 5th century Pope Gelasius I prescribed that all ordinations take place on Ember Saturdays, following apostolic tradition.  "Then they, fasting and praying, and imposing their hands upon them, sent them away" (Acts 13:3).  Thus, linking ordinations with Ember Days, not only did the candidates fast and pray for a few days before receiving Holy Orders, but all of the faithful joined in as well for the sanctification of the priests.  May we likewise use these upcoming Ember Days to offer prayer and penance to God for our newly ordained priests, deacons, and all priests.

Thomas A Kempis wrote beautifully of the priest.  "A priest clad in his sacred vestments is Christ's vicegerent, to pray to God for himself, and for all the people, in a suppliant and humble manner; he has before and behind him the sign of the Cross of the Lord, that he may always remember the Passion of Christ; he bears the Cross before him in his vestment, that he may diligently behold the footsteps of Christ, and fervently endeavor to follow them; he is marked with the Cross behind, that he may mildly suffer, for God's sake, whatsoever adversities shall befall him from others; he wears the Cross before him, that he may bewail his own sins; and behind him, that, through compassion, he may lament the sins of others, and know that he is placed as it were, a mediator betwixt God and the sinner; neither ought he to cease from prayer and oblation, till he be favored with the grace and mercy which he implores.  When a priest celebrates, he honors God, he rejoices the Angels, he edifies the Church, he helps the living, he obtains rest for the dead, and makes himself a partaker of all that is good."

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may touch them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body.
Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Thy Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unworldly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood.
Let Thy Holy Love surround them from the world's contagion.
Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister
be their joy and consolation here and their everlasting crown hereafter.
Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us: obtain for us numerous and holy priests. Amen.

God bless!

Consecration to the Holy Ghost

Consecration to the Holy Ghost
O Holy Spirit, divine Spirit of light and love, to Thee I consecrate my understanding, my heart, my will, my whole being for time and for eternity.
May my understanding be ever submissive to Thy divine inspirations and to the teaching of the Holy Catholic Church of which Thou are the infallible guide; may my heart be ever inflamed with love of God and of neighbor; may my will be ever conformed to the divine will, and may my whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to Whom with the Father and with Thee, O Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever.  Amen.

God bless!

Chaplet of the Holy Spirit

I pray you have a blessed Feast of the Ascension!!!

With Ascension Thursday fast approaching, our thoughts should soon turn toward Pentecost Sunday.  Like the Apostles who remained in the Upper Room, praying and awaiting the promised Holy Spirit, we  also should spend the days after Ascension Thursday, praying to the Holy Spirit, imploring Him to shower us with His abundant graces.

One fitting prayer to recite especially during this time of year is the Chaplet of the Holy Spirit.  The Chaplet of the Holy Spirit was composed in 1892 by a Franciscan Capuchin missionary in order to provide the faithful an easy way to honor the Holy Ghost. The chaplet was approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1902.  This prayer is intended to be in regard to the Holy Ghost what the Rosary is in regard to the Blessed Virgin.
+               +               +

*The Chaplet of the Holy Spirit begins with three beads; on these three beads, make the Sign of the Cross, recite an Act of Contrition, and recite or sing the hymn "Come Holy Ghost." (see below for the hymn).

*Following these first three prayers, the chaplet consists of five groups of seven beads each. Before and after each group there are two large beads.

*There is a mystery for each of the five groups with meditations and applications following each mystery. Begin each group with recitation of the mystery, the meditation, and the application.  Then recite an Our Father on one of the large beads and a Hail Mary on the other large bead.  On the seven small beads recite the Glory Be.

*On the remaining two large beads after the last set of seven beads, recite an Apostles Creed on one of the beads.  On the final bead recite an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intention of the Holy Father.

Chaplet of the Holy Spirit
***Sign of the Cross.
***Act of Contrition.
***Veni, Creator Spiritus

VENI, Creator Spiritus,
mentes tuorum visita,
imple superna gratia
quae tu creasti pectora.

Qui diceris Paraclitus,
altissimi donum Dei,
fons vivus, ignis, caritas,
et spiritalis unctio.

Tu, septiformis munere,
digitus paternae dexterae,
Tu rite promissum Patris,
sermone ditans guttura.

Accende lumen sensibus:
infunde amorem cordibus:
infirma nostri corporis
virtute firmans perpeti.

Hostem repellas longius,
pacemque dones protinus:
ductore sic te praevio
vitemus omne noxium.

Per te sciamus da Patrem,
noscamus atque Filium;
Teque utriusque Spiritum
credamus omni tempore.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
et Filio, qui a mortuis
surrexit, ac Paraclito,
in saeculorum saecula.
 Amen.
Come Holy Ghost

COME, Holy Ghost Creator blest,
And in our souls take up Thy rest,
Come with Thy grace and heavenly aid,
And fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

To Thee, the Comforter, we cry,
To Thee, the gift of God most high,
The fount of life, the fire of love,
The soul's anointing from above.

The sevenfold gifts of grace are Thine,
O Finger of the hand Divine;
True promise of the Father Thou,
Who dost the tongue with speech endow.

Thy light to every thought impart,
And shed Thy love in every heart;
Our body's poor infirmity
With strength perpetual fortify.

Our mortal foe afar repel,
Grant us henceforth in peace to dwell;
If Thou be our preventing guide,
No evil can our steps betide.

Make Thou to us the Father known;
Teach us the Eternal Son to own,
And Thee, Whose name we ever bless,
Of Both the Spirit to confess.

All glory while the ages run
Be to the Father and the Son,
Who rose from death; the same to Thee,
O Holy Ghost, eternally.
Amen.

***The First Mystery:  By the Holy Ghost is Jesus conceived of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Meditation: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the Power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: and therefore also the holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35).

Application: Pray earnestly for the assistance of the Spirit of God and the intercession of Mary to imitate the virtues of Jesus Christ who is the pattern of every virtue, in order that you may be conformed to the image of the Son of God.

***Our Father once, Hail Mary once, and Glory Be 7 times

***The Second Mystery:  The Spirit of the Lord rested upon Jesus

The Meditation: "Now Jesus being baptized went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened unto Him; and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him.  (Matthew 3:16).

Application:  Hold in the highest esteem the precious gift of sanctifying grace which was infused into your soul by  the Holy Ghost in Baptism. Keep the promises to whose observance you then bound yourself. By continual exercise increase your Faith, your Hope, your Charity.  Ever live as becometh a child of God and a member of the true Church of God, so that after this life you may receive heaven as your inheritance.

***Our Father once, Hail Mary once, and Glory Be 7 times

***The Third Mystery:  By the Spirit is Jesus led into the desert

The Meditation: "And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from the Jordan:  and was led by the Spirit into the desert for the space of forty days, and was tempted by the devil (Luke 4:1, 2).

Application: Be ever thankful for the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit given to you in Confirmation, for the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and fortitude, of knowledge and piety, and of the fear of the Lord.  Faithfully obey your divine Guide, so that you may act manfully in all the perils of this life and in all temptations, as becomes a perfect Christian and a strong athlete of Jesus Christ.

***Our Father once, Hail Mary once, and Glory Be 7 times

***The Fourth Mystery:  The Holy Ghost in the Church

The Meditation: "And suddenly there came from Heaven a sound as of a mighty wind coming, where they were sitting; and they were filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking the wonderful works of God" (Acts 2:2, 4, 11).

Application: Give thanks to God that He has made you a child of His Church which is always quickened and governed by His divine Spirit, who was sent into the world on the day of Pentecost.  Hear and follow the sovereign Pontiff who teaches infallibly through the Holy Spirit, and the Church which is the pillar and ground of truth.  Hold fast her doctrines, maintain her cause, defend her rights.

***Our Father once, Hail Mary once, and Glory Be 7 times

***The Fifth Mystery:  The Holy Ghost in the soul of the just man

The Meditation: "Know ye not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, Who is in you?" (I Cor. 6:19). "Extinguish not the Spirit:" (1 Thess. 5:19). "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God in Whom ye are sealed unto the day of redemption:" (Eph. 4:30).

Application: Be ever mindful of the Holy Ghost Who is within you, and make every effort to be pure in mind and body.  Faithfully obey His divine inspirations, that you may bring forth the fruits of the Spirit:  which are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, meekness, faith, moderation, continence, and chastity.

***Our Father once, Hail Mary once, and Glory Be 7 times

***Conclude with the Apostles' Creed.

***Recite one Our Father and one Hail Mary and Glory be to the Father for the intentions of the Pope.

God bless!

Prayer to St. Philip Neri

On May 26 Holy Mother Church celebrates the feast of St. Philip Neri, often referred to as the Saint of the Joyous Heart. As we near the end of the Paschal season of the Church, may we reflect on the words of Fr. Prosper Gueranger: “...Joy is the leading feature of the Paschal Season, a supernatural joy, which springs from our delight at seeing the glorious triumph of our Emmanuel, and from the happiness we feel at our own being delivered from the bonds of death. This interior Joy was the characteristic of [...Saint Philip Neri]. His heart was ever full of a jubilant enthusiasm for what regards God; so that, we could truly apply to him those words of Scripture: A secure mind is like a continual feast (Prov. xv. 15).”
Remembering that, although the Paschal season of the Church soon draws to a close, the joy of the Risen Christ and our Eternal Reward should remain always in our hearts, may we strive to imitate St. Philip Neri in his joyful love for God and all he met.

Prayer to St. Philip Neri
my dear and holy Patron, Philip, I put myself into thy hands, and for the love of Jesus, for that love's sake which chose thee and made thee a saint, I implore thee to pray for me, that, as He has brought thee to heaven so in due time He may take me to heaven
also.

And I ask of thee especially to gain for me a true devotion such as thou hadst to the Holy Ghost, the Third Person in the Ever-blessed Trinity; that, as He at Pentecost so miraculously filled thy heart with His grace, I too may in my measure have the gifts necessary for my salvation.

Therefore I ask thee to gain for me those His seven great gifts, to dispose and excite my heart towards faith and virtue.
Beg for me the gift of Wisdom, that I may prefer heaven to earth and know truth from falsehood :
The gift of Understanding, by which I may have imprinted upon my mind the mysteries of His Word:
The gift of Counsel, that I may see my way in all perplexities:
The gift of Fortitude, that with bravery and stubbornness I may battle with my foe:
The gift of Knowledge, to enable me to direct all my doings with a pure intention to the glory of God:
The gift of Religion, to make me devout and conscientious:
And the gift of Holy Fear, to make me feel awe, reverence and sobriety amid all my spiritual blessings.

Sweetest Father, Flower of Purity, Martyr of Charity, pray for me.
--Bl. John Henry Newman

In the far North our lot is cast,
Where faithful hearts are few;
Still are we Philip’s children dear,
And Peter’s soldiers true.

Founder and Sire! to mighty Rome,
Beneath St. Peter's shade,
Thy early vow of loyal love
And ministry was paid.

The solemn porch and portal high
Of Peter was thy home;
The world’s Apostle he, and thou
Apostle of his Rome.

And first in the old Catacombs,
In galleries long and deep,
Where martyr Popes had ruled the flock,
And slept their glorious sleep,

There didst thou pass the nights in prayer,
Until at length there came,
Down on thy breast, new lit for thee,
The Pentecostal flame;-

Then, in that heart-consuming love,
Didst walk the city wide,
And lure the noble and the young
From Babel’s pomp and pride;

And gathering them within thy cell,
Unveil the lustre bright
And beauty of thy inner soul,
And gain them by the sight.

And thus to Rome, for Peter's faith
Far known, thou didst impart
The lessons of the hidden life,
And discipline of heart.

And as the Apostle, on the hill
Facing the Imperial Town,
First gazed upon his fair domain,
Then on the cross lay down,

So thou, from out the streets of Rome
Didst turn thy failing eye
Unto that mount of martyrdom,*
Take leave of it, and die.

Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

***Reminder:  the Novena for the Feast of Pentecost begins this Friday, after Ascension Thursday, and ends the Saturday before Pentecost Sunday.

The following prayer was written by St. Alphonsus Liguori, a bishop and doctor of the Church and founder of the Redemptorist order. This prayer is very fitting to recite on Pentecost Sunday.  Just as the Holy Spirit bestowed His gifts on the Apostles on Pentecost, may we, through this beautiful prayer, also pray that He will grant us His seven gifts.

Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son.  I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints.

I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me.

O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of holy fear, so that it may act on me as a check to prevent me from falling back into my past sins, for which I beg pardon.

Grant me the gift of piety, so that I may serve You for the future with increased fervor, follow with
more promptness Your holy inspirations, and observe your divine precepts with greater fidelity.

Grant me the gift of knowledge, so that I may know the things of God and, enlightened by Your holy teaching, may walk, without deviation, in the path of eternal salvation.

Grant me the gift of fortitude, so that I may overcome courageously all the assaults of the devil, and all the dangers of this world which threaten the salvation of my soul.

Grant me the gift of counsel, so that I may choose what is more conducive to my spiritual advancement and may discover the wiles and snares of the tempter.

Grant me the gift of understanding, so that I may apprehend the divine mysteries and by contemplation of heavenly things detach my thoughts and affections from the vain things of this miserable world.

Grant me the gift of wisdom, so that I may rightly direct all my actions, referring them to God as my last end; so that, having loved Him and served Him in this life, I may have the happiness of possessing Him eternally in the next.  Amen.

God bless!

Novena for the Feast of Pentecost

A novena is a nine day prayer recalling the nine days that Mary and the Apostles remained in the upper room praying for the promised Spirit. Because of the link between the first novena and Pentecost, the “Novena to the Holy Spirit” is considered the chief of all novenas. Thus it is a great practice to imitate the Apostles and spend these days before Pentecost, using this novena or other prayers, to beg for the gifts of the Holy Spirit, that by obtaining them, we may use them to love and serve God more perfectly.

The novena begins on the Friday after Ascension Thursday (this year May 30) and ends nine days later on the Saturday (this year June 7) before Pentecost Sunday.

Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Novena to the Holy Spirit

First Day: Come, O Holy Spirit, the Lord and Lifegiver; take up Thy dwelling within my soul, and make of it Thy sacred temple. Make me live by grace as an adopted son of God. Pervade all the energies of my soul, and create in me a fountain of living water springing up into life everlasting.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Second Day: Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, and power, and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Show me the way by which I may be able to attain to them and possess them, and hold them hereafter, my own forever.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Third Day: Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our minds, that we may know and believe all the mysteries of salvation, and may merit at last to see the eternal light in Thy light; and in the light of glory to have the clear vision of Thee and the Father and the Son.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Fourth Day: Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all my ways, that I may always do Thy holy will. Incline my heart to that which is good, turn it away from all that is evil, and direct me by the path of Thy Commandments to the goal of eternal life for which I long.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Fifth Day: Come, O Spirit of Fortitude, and give fortitude to our souls. Make our hearts strong in all trials and in all distress, pouring forth abundantly into them the gifts of strength, that we may be able to resist the attacks of the devil.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Sixth Day: Come, O Spirit of Knowledge and make us understand and despise the emptiness and nothingness of the world. Give us grace to use the world only for Thy glory and the salvation of Thy creatures. May we always be very faithful in putting Thy rewards before every earthly gift.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Seventh Day: Come, O Spirit of Piety, possess my heart; incline it to a true faith in Thee, to a holy love of Thee, my God, that with my whole soul I may seek Thee, and find Thee my best, my truest joy.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Eighth Day: Come, O Spirit of holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may set Thee, my Lord and God, before my face forever; and shun off things that can offend Thee, so that I may be made worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Thy divine Majesty in the heaven of heavens, where Thou livest and reignest in the unity of the Ever-blessed Trinity, God, world without end.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Ninth Day: Come, O Holy Comforter, and grant us a relish for heavenly things. Produce in our souls the flowers and fruits of virtue, so that, being filled with all sweetness and joy in the pursuit of good, we may attain unto eternal blessedness.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.
